STUDY TOUR – SOUTH INDIA

January 2018
Wayanand , Trissur, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Madhurai, Karaikudi, Thanjavur, Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram

From the distant echoes of the hills in Wayanad to the wild battering of the waves in Mahabalipuram, the students of second year of architecture hopped in for an educational journey exploring works of the past as well as the present.  The works of Masters across time seen right through the magnificent yet humble palaces and the simple society through the expressive paintings of Ravi Verma which hang so gracefully on the walls in Sri Chitra Art gallery, Thiruvananthapuram. The feeling of wholeness in the omnipresence of the works of Laurie Baker reflected in every nook and corner of Thiruvananthapuram and to top it all was the bewildering walk through the pa Padmanabhapuram Palace which left us all in awe and a sense of pride. Madurai and Thanjavur welcomed us into the glory and spirituality of the elegant temple architecture. It brought us into the world of many fables and interesting folklore alongside with the accuracy and efficiency of calculation and human effort put in by our ancestors centuries ago…

The emergence of a new era which set in by the arrival of the French in Pondicherry has still left a permanent effect on the Heritage of the people here not only through the iconic buildings but also the contemporary pop culture!

With the last bend in the road we had the opportunity to walk through the Rathas and the Shore temple which were still testing the tides of time. Before we headed back we explored the various vernacular styles of the traditional houses of south India. The 2018 South India tour was not only a platform for exploring new places but also forming bonds with our fellow mates and our dynamic faculty who supported and guided us throughout this journey of ours.
